Take It Easy on the Back Markers

The last race in Malaysia we saw Sebastian Vettel very angry after the race when he cut in front of Narain Karthikeyen and cut his tire. It was very clear when you watched the replay (and in real time) that Vettel just tried cutting in front of Narain too soon. This brings me to the point that the front runners need to understand that the back markers are also in the race, trying to finish ahead of their own competition. The back markers have to look in front of them also, not just in their mirrors. It is racing after all, you have to pass everyone, even if they are lapped. It obviously is the polite thing to let a faster car past, but when you are being passed by multiple cars, it is not easy to let off the gas and pull off to the side and let everyone past. I don't mind if cars get stuck behind lapped cars, if you cannot get past a car, you cannot expect them to just pull over for you. So all you front runners need to respect the fact that there are slower cars that are still in

Malaysia In Review

I think I remember last weekend saying that the next race would end with Fernando Alonso on the top podium spot with Sergio Perez in 2nd. I believe I also predicted Sebastian Vettel and Jensen Button not finishing in the points. Or may be I didn't? Either way the Malaysian Grand Prix was definitely a nail biter to say the least. Where to start? First of all, Alonso's victory is huge and I was surprised to hear him downplay it after the race. That being said winning a race doesn't make the car magically faster, so I see where he was coming from. Fernando was lucky. Sergio Perez was gaining on Alonso almost a second a lap, only his small error that resulted in him running off the track caused him not winning. I would say this race has been Perez's highlight of his F1 career, but I undoubtedly see him on the top spot of the podium in seasons to come. Hamilton finished 3rd once again after starting on pole. The season will go good for him if he can keep getting these podium

Season Opener Finished

I am afraid I am writing this with my foot in my mouth. Before the season started I predicted Lewis Hamilton's chances of having a successful season seem about as hopeful as Greece going to war against Great Britain. Well, not only did Hamilton absolutely blitz everyone else during qualifying, he also finished on the podium, despite falling back at the start of the race. With that in mind, Jensen Button will appear to be very fast this year. He qualified second Saturday, then dominated the race on Sunday. Personally I am glad that the team that made the best looking car, without that ugly "punched in the nose" front end, appear to have the fastest car. That also being said, the Red Bull RB8 looked pretty good once the race started, so I don't think they will just be nipping on the heels of McLaren all season long. So who will I give the tip of the hat to? Well certainly not Felipe Massa who had a frankly pathetic qualifying session and race. Fernando Alonso on the ot

F1 "hopefuls" need to find a new hobby

No, I am not talking about young drivers who are trying to make their debut in Formula 1. This message goes out to the likes of Nick Heidfeld, Adrian Sutil, Rubens Barichello, etc. Every day I see a new article about one of these drivers who was ousted since last season, and are trying to still get a drive. These drivers need to look at their situation. Adrian Sutil is facing serious criminal charges, Barichello is really quite old (and has never won a championship), and Heidfeld has also been around for quite awhile. Now I am not saying these drivers don't deserve drives, or that they are lacking talent, but teams aren't going to be looking for them when there is a large selection of fresh meat waiting everywhere to be picked. Be honest, would you rather see how Michael Schumacher or Jean Eric-Vergne perform in 2012? Michael's heyday was many moons ago, and we are now in an era of Vettel and Alonso. One of the latest stories I read said that Mercedes wants to sign Schumach

What is a Real Sport?

Every year everybody and their dog tune in to watch the glorious spectacle that is the Superbowl. Well I'm here to tell you that football is not the only sport. Basketball is not the only sport. And if you like to watch golf then you should consider some psychiatric help. I personally love hockey, but why just enjoy one sporting event? So, what sport should you like? Well, there is one sporting event that is considerably under-rated and for no good reason. Think about when you watch the summer Olympics. Do you watch men in tights with massive shoulder pads throwing around a ball that resembles your morning stools? No, chances are you like watching the track and field events. Well, you may be thinking, how can I watch track? Well, you could start off by getting off that recliner and venturing out into the world known as the outdoors, and go to your local high school or even college to watch. Now consider this, track field was one of the earliest sporting events. People have enjoy

Who will be Top Driver for the 2012 F1 season?

In 2011 Sebastian Vettel made everyone else look like they were lapping around in their grandmother's Buick. Dominating the race, and rarely bested in  qualifying, who will stop his reign as top F1 driver? Well Fernando Alonso seems like a likely candidate, but his teammate Felipe Massa has already said the car needs improvement to be competitive. That being said, Massa will try every trick in the book to stay in Formula 1. In my opinion, Alonso's the man to stop the pesky German. This is the driver that put an end to Michael Schumacher's 5-in-a-row championships. He's not the only one that has the car and skill to try and dethrone Vettel. Vettel's own teammate, Mark Webber, also can show his ability before he hits the golf courses in retirement. He's not my number two pick however, that honor goes to Jensen Button. He clearly out drove his teammate Lewis Hamilton last season, and I think we've just seen the beginning of what he's capable of. In the thir

Being a Formula 1 fan in America's Midwest

I am a minority in South Dakota. Not a minority that you are thinking of. My ancestry consists of Norwegians and Irish people. That's right, my family of the past had names like Lief Eriksson and plundered the lands of the Canadian northeast, while my relatives in Ireland looked at potatoes and flocks of sheep all day. Back to what I want to talk about, I am an outcast in this Midwestern society. I am a Formula 1 fan. That's right, not Nascar. People ask me, "did you watch the race yesterday," to which I cheerfully inform them that I like the European dominated F1. "Oh, you like Indy cars!" No, I'm afraid Indy cars are banging rocks onto others rocks to make shapes while Formula 1 has the most innovative engineering this side of NASA. I have nothing against Indy car racing apart from the poor regulations of their rules. I try to spread my love of F1, but it is shot down faster than a Messerschmidt in a dog fight with a P-51 Mustang and the glorious flyin

The Creature That is the 2012 Formula 1 Car

Most of 2012 F1 teams have released their new car to do intense battle with each other, only it would appear most are diving in with a broken nose. The "stepped" nose is definitely the most obvious change from last year. Now as of now, McLaren's MP4-27  is the only car that did not go this route, and I may be inclined to cheer for them this season beings they have the only "normal" looking car. Sahara Force India appear to be the only team that have been able to make their car look normal with the new design. On the other hand, last years dominators, Red Bull Racing, must have been serving large quantities of scotch on the rocks at their redesigning party. Yes, I do believe Adrian Newey had a few pints when he drew that front nose on the RB8. But as we all know, being a Newey creation, the RB8 will be lightning fast on track. I won't be surprised if it overtakes the International Space Station. In due time we will get used to this new front nose idea, but I

Greetings

Greetings from me, Trevor Gibbs. I am a student at South Dakota State University, yes commonly known as...tractor school, but I'm not studying tractors. Or corn for that matter. I will be blogging about many random things. Please read for Formula 1 news, my thoughts on products that I own and some that I don't, places I have traveled to, etc. I like to think of my self as an unbiased source that you can expand your knowledge from, but of course, like anyone, I have many opinions. I hope you will enjoy reading my blog in the future (or just skimming for something decent to read when you are aimlessly surfing this wonderful invention known as the inter web.
